In 1999, Peter Merholz, a young San Francisco based designer spoofed the relatively unknown word weblog and displayed it as “we blog” on his personal site. In the next 10 years, the unwieldy and awkward word grew from being an exclusive preserve of the tech savvy to become the dominant face of the Internet. It became Merriam-Webster’s word of the year in 2004. It spawned an entire subset of language to explain itself. The 133 million “netizens” of its “blogosphere” rang alarm bells in mainstream media organizations, and it was arguably responsible for the millionth word in English: Web 2.0.
With India boasting of around half a million blogs, and all the major news channels consisting of a presence in the blogosphere, there is no doubt that this powerful media is here to stay. Blogomania, an event to exploit this face of the internet, aims to pit the top bloggers of the nation against one another. Primarily a contest to test the blogging skills of the contestant, this is a platform to showcase one’s eloqence, wit and humour to impress the masses.

The rules of the game are simple. The event spans for three months, January to March. Each month the contestant will be presented with seven topics and has to blog on a few of them (two in January, three in February and two in march, to be specific). The final winner will be chosen on the basis of the blog’s popularity, decided by an open-for-all rating system.
So, are you a crowd-puller? Do you think you are capable of battling some of the best bloggers in town to be crowned “Lord of the blog”.
